The UUFP, EarthRising, and CUUPS

After many months and many emails, EarthRising is once again a member of CUUPS, the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans. What does this mean, and how did we get here?

“The Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) is an organization dedicated to networking Pagan-identified Unitarian Universalists (UUs), educating people about Paganism, promoting interfaith dialogue, developing Pagan liturgies and theologies, and supporting Pagan-identified UU religious professionals.”

“The Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) was chartered by the Unitarian Universalist Association at the General Assembly in 1987 for purposes of enabling:

  • networking among Pagan Identified UUs; providing outreach of Unitarian Universalism to the broader Pagan community continentally.
  • providing educational materials on Paganism for Unitarian Universalist congregations and the general public.
  • promoting Pagan – Jewish & Christian dialogue; encouraging the development of theo/alogical and liturgical materials based on earth and nature centered religious and spiritual perspectives.
  • encouraging greater use of music, dance, visual arts, poetry, story, and creative ritual in Unitarian Universalist worship and celebration.
  • providing support for Pagan-identified UU religious professionals and ministerial students; and fostering healing relationships with our mother the Earth and all her children.”

As a Chapter of CUUPS, EarthRising will be much more visible to new visitors and the greater community. This will allow people visiting to locate the UUFP quickly as a Pagan-friendly UU by way of EarthRising. If you would like to be a member of CUUPS, go to

EarthRising would love to have you visit an event. Who are we, and what do we do?

EarthRising, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula’s Earth-Centered, Neo-Pagan group, had its first sacred circle in 1988, making it the oldest CUUPS (Covenant of UU Pagans) group in Virginia, second oldest in the South, and one of the oldest in America. EarthRising was founded by three members of UUFP. Present EarthRising Cochair Robin van Tine, feminist and activist Margarat Cubberly, and past President of UUFP Elaine Collins started a study group in 1987, which became EarthRising.

EarthRising celebrates the Seasons of Earth and the Cross-Quarters days, in support of Pagan, Pantheist, and a modern Nature spirituality. The circle is always open for sharing ideas and inspirations! Planning usually happens two weeks before Ritual.

UUnBound was created as a way for EarthRising to come together more than eight times a year. UUnBound is a place where discussions, fellowship, workshops, creativity, and education are woven together monthly.

Please check the UUFP events calendar for dates and times of rituals, plannings, and UUnBound sessions.

Blessed be!
