February 2nd: “When I Am Frightened”

Fear is a natural response to a threat, pushing us to quickly choose a response that will help get us through.  For self-aware and social beings, though, there’s more to it than “fight or flight”: we can imagine a threat to ourselves or those we love and then feel fear as if the threat were real.  Thankfully, as self-aware and social beings, we also have the means to transcend our fears.

February 9th: “Forming, Transforming”

“Change alone is unchanging,” say the sages; “nothing is fixed, forever.”  Even though we know this, we yearn for the world — at least as we have grown accustomed to it — to pretty much stay the same.  For many of us, “change” is all too often spelled “L-O-S-S”.  And yet, there is lasting good that we can build together; as for the bad, the sages also say that “this too shall pass.”

Special music will be provided by the UUFP ChorUUs!

February 16th: “Embracing the Joy of Response-Ability”

Cleaning up the messes of the past can be hard — even more-so when we didn’t make them!  But not only do we have the responsibility to address the injustices in today’s world, we can do so with passion and joy.  Join April Kelsey for this empowering and encouraging message for difficult times.

April Kelsey came to the UUFP in November 2016.  She has since become a member and has contributed to several ministries, most notably Adult Religious Education and the Sunday Morning Forum.  She is passionate about writing and works as a Communications Strategist for a local non-profit.

February 23rd: “Leap of Faith”

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent as a time of faithful preparation for Easter.  And this Saturday is Leap Day, the adjustment we make every four years to keep our calendar in sync with the seasons.  What do these days tell us about our understanding of time, our perspectives on the past and the future, and our willingness to risk the unknown?
