“Our SUUmer AdventUUre!”

SUUmer AdventUUre = GratitUUde! That’s what we have for our marvelous moms (and dads) for sharing these stories of growth and gratitude about their children. And, this SUUmer AdventUUre would not be complete without (as Mom Rachel notes) adding to our gratitude journals the fact that we have a super DRE who inspires us!

As we see the article's author often include as her email signature message: “Community matters; let’s build it together!”

At the beginning of the summer, we had a lovely surprise: Ms. Joanne dropped by!  With her she had two SUUmer AdventUUre Journals, filled with possible ideas for experiences for the kids to do over the summer. She left instructions that if they got at least 10 activities done by the end of the summer, they would be rewarded.

Well, Gabrielle and Jason recently completed 10! Some of their highlights included travelling to see their grandfather outside of Washington DC in his 14th floor condo where we could see dozens of fireworks displays for July 4th. We planted and maintained flowers at home and also identified different plants and insects on various hikes around our region. We explored a new path walking along Canon Boulevard in Newport News, where the kids danced and made a bicyclist smile, as he passed the other way. The kids played a new card game, Dungeon Mayhem, for a family game night and enjoyed it so much that they played it with each other the next day (nicely)! They helped prepare a special family meal (Jason helped barbecue, while Gabbie made artichoke spinach dip that was outstanding). They have been recycling, reusing, and repurposing regularly (they have even pulled out some books to donate to our neighborhood Little Library), as well as making sure to spend extra time playing with and snuggling our family kitties.

It is truly lovely to be able to look back at their journals and see that despite the challenges in the world our kids are still able, even if in small ways, to live our values. A big thank you goes to Ms. Joanne for motivating us; we had fun and are so grateful!
