Sunday Forum: “We’re Doing Dying All Wrong”
From 9:30 am to 10:30 amPresented by Gary Ott (R), Parker Stokes (R) & Kathryn Ozyurt Dr. Ken Hillman, Australian doctor and researcher, writes “A huge majority of people at the end of their lives want to die at home, but only a small number manage to do this. In Hillman’s Ted Talk, “We’re Doing Dying All Wrong,” he asks why. Many of us have experienced an elderly loved one coming to the end of their life in a hospital—over-treated, infantilized and, worst of all, facing a death without dignity.” Dr. Hillman suggests how we can do better. Retired as the science coordinator to the Coast Guard in 2006, Gary’s specialized training and experience in large emergencies is in “risk communications,” a science-based approach for communicating effectively in situations of high stress, high concern, or controversy. These professional skills are transferable to personal relationships, helping to better manage our own communication challenges. Dr. Parker Stokes retired last year after a 42-year career at Hampton Family Practice. He has worked in the medical office, hospital and emergency room settings. Parker shares his years of experiences with the UUFP using community building skills. Kathryn Ozyurt, lifelong Unitarian Universalist and long-term UUFP member, has dedicatedly served many years as our Adult RE Chair and Co-chair. In these and other roles, she continues to be pivotal in providing a collaborative, expansive, thought-provoking Sunday Morning Forum program!
