Sunday Forum: “Socioacracy”

2021-07-11 09:30 2021-07-11 10:30 America/New_York Sunday Forum: “Socioacracy”

Presented by Rev. Andrew Millard Unitarian Universalism affirms “the use of the democratic process within our congregations”, but it doesn’t specify what that process should look like.  Usually we take it to mean majority rule, but merely voting is a minimal way to exercise “the right of conscience” (which is also part of our Fifth Principle) when there’s a minority that loses the vote.  Consensus is a long established way to make decisions that doesn’t have winners and losers, but that’s at the cost of allowing any individual to block what would otherwise be the collective will.  A workshop at last month’s UUA General Assembly offered Sociocracy or “dynamic governance” as another way to make decisions, using consent to make a “good enough” decision while deepening relationships and building community.
