Sunday Forum: “Here comes the finish line: From Principles to Values. Maybe.”

2023-05-21 09:30 2023-05-21 10:30 America/New_York Sunday Forum: “Here comes the finish line: From Principles to Values. Maybe.”

Presented by UUFP President Rebecca “Bek” Wheeler By June 5, 2023, UU Delegates to the General Assembly will have submitted their Amendments on the Proposed Values, Covenants, and Inspirations that might **replace our Principles & Sources.**  Only about 10 amendments of the over 500 ideas submitted will go forward.  By June 24,  the Delegates will have voted at General Assembly on the Article II Revision as amended. If the revision succeeds, we keep talking. Then comes the final vote in 2024. If the revision to our Principles/Sources fails either in 2023 or 2024, no more talk of revision for five years.  Of course, UUFP President Bek Wheeler submitted an amendment idea. She sought to return the proposed “inherent dignity and worthiness,” back to our powerful “inherent worth and dignity.” Bek’s has received THE most commentary among the nearly 500 amendment ideas. Here’s what she submitted (as itself revised).  “Equity: We affirm the inherent worth and dignity of each person. We covenant to use our time, wisdom, attention, and money to build and sustain fully accessible and inclusive communities. We work to build a world where all flourish in lives of meaning and significance.”  This keeps aspects of the proposed revision, returns to the “inherent worth and dignity” wording and blends suggestions from others.  In this Sunday’s Forum, Bek Wheeler will sketch the what’s, when’s, why’s and how’s of the process as UUs nationwide consider revising our Principles into Values. She will attempt to answer any and all questions. Hope to see you there.
