Sunday Forum: “A Shared Journey of Transition and Love”
From 9:30 am to 10:30 amDeborah R. Fabian, M.D. & Leslie Hilburn Fabian (l to r) at Deb’s induction into William & Mary’s Olde Guarde, Spring, 2022 Presented by Leslie and Deborah Fabian When Leslie Hilburn met David Fabian in 1987, he was a guest speaker at Leslie’s women’s group—and he was wearing a purple dress! Thus began their trans journey, often a double-edged sword. Twenty years into their 1991 marriage, it was Leslie who finally said, “You need to do something different! Do you want to be miserable for the rest of your life?” After weeks of deep questioning, David began the transgender transition. Leslie’s 2014 book, My Husband’s a Woman Now: A Shared Journey of Transition and Love, tells the story of the Fabians’ devotion and the myriad challenges they faced, as David became Deborah, a lifelong dream. On August 28, the Fabians will talk about their unusual “shared transition,” and what it’s like to alter nearly every aspect of the lives they’d known. Deborah R. Fabian is a recently retired orthopedic surgeon who grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She is the father of four adult children. As David, he practiced in Framingham, Massachusetts, after graduating from William and Mary and Hahnemann Medical School (now Drexel University College of Medicine) and serving in the US Navy. David also practiced orthopedics in Gardner, Massachusetts, where Deborah emerged and continued to practice. Ultimately, the transition led to a successful discrimination lawsuit against a Connecticut Hospital, and practicing at the army hospital at Fort Polk, Louisiana and the Indian Medical Center in Gallup, New Mexico. Leslie Hilburn Fabian, from Tampa, Florida, is an author, with a master’s degree in social work from Boston College, and mother of two grown children. She practiced psychotherapy for many years. My Husband’s a Woman Now is her first book. The Fabians recently completed a two-year training at Rowe UU Conference Center, in Western Massachusetts, becoming spiritual guides. Both are now happily retired in Williamsburg, with all six “children” and four grandchildren, under the age of four, living in Colorado and Utah!
