Sunday Forum: “Journey to Asylum – Walking side by side with those seeking safety in America”

2020-12-20 09:30 2020-12-20 10:30 America/New_York Sunday Forum: “Journey to Asylum – Walking side by side with those seeking safety in America”

Presented by Jessica Sapilio Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists Social Justice Co-chair Many UU congregations around the country support migrants as part of the Unitarian Universalists Service Committee’s Congregational Accompaniment Program for Asylum Seekers. The Journey to Asylum program seeks to offer compassion and solidarity to migrants and their families. They sponsor, house, financially support, and accompany them through the process of obtaining legal asylum. For many migrants, such sponsorship can mean the difference between pursuing asylum from a place of safety and freedom and going through the entire court proceedings from a detention center. The UUFP is providing monthly financial assistance to this program that the Social and Environmental Justice Committee is distributing from the Hagner Fund. Our fellow UU congregation in Williamsburg renders hands-on support to this program. At our 12/20 forum, Jessica Sapalio, social justice co-chair from the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists, will talk about their program’s first six months supporting an asylum-seeking family. From the legal process, to setting up new lives in Williamsburg, to hopes for immigration reform with the new administration, our guest speaker will describe their journey of love and learning through this meaningful outreach.
