Stretch Goal: Funding for our Future
September 17, 2020
Dearest members and friends,
While it’s been quite the spring and summer, your Planning Committee has been busy, yes even during these times of COVID. In March, our stay-or-go vote resoundingly affirmed "Go!" In June, Stewardship Consultant, Mark Ewert, led our virtual “Next Steps Fortnight.” In early July, we received his report and transitioned to a new UUFP Board. And your Policy Board has been busy, too, with its review of the “Next Steps” report and thoughts about how best to proceed.
Throughout, the Planning Committee has collaborated with the Real Estate Task Force. We’re working with Jay Joseph on when to sell our Youngs Mill property. And when we sell it, how we store our belongings, and where we might find an interim landing pad before we find a permanent, new home.
And speaking of that new home, we and you have been looking. Indeed, we have considered nine properties and in doing so have been learning about our needs—space, green space, access, and zoning.
Investment in the full health of our Beloved Community...this deepening engagement...where each of us invests most fully in the heart and soul of being UU here on the Peninsula. This is called Stewardship.
We’ve been learning from our neighbors—Williamsburg UUs and Coastal Virginia UUs. Building on these local contacts, Parker Stokes has met with TowneBank to discover the mechanics of financing, selling, building a down payment, and running a capital campaign to finance our new church home. Very soon, we will share a longer-view timeline with the Board.
And so, for all who are eager to get in on the ground floor and help the Fellowship in these early investigatory stages, you have an opportunity now to invest in our people and our process for finding our new home.
Meanwhile, Mark Ewert’s "Next Steps Fortnight" gave us a bird’s eye view of where we are, where we are going and that we should expect some community changes along the way. We learned that we have been very good at so-called “Green Eye-Shade Accounting”—looking at finances as line-items, necessities for daily operations. That’s good, but it’s not all we can be.
We have learned that investment in the full health of our Beloved Community goes much further. In this deepening engagement, we seek to enhance a culture where each of us invests most fully in the heart and soul of being UU here on the Peninsula. This is called Stewardship.
And yes, there is much to learn on this journey.
To that end, the Board has authorized Mark Ewert to return (via zoom). We hope to meet with him soon, in October or November. With his guidance, we will learn how to integrate a capital campaign, real estate transactions, governance and financial planning—all to support our vision to grow, move, and share UU values more broadly on the Peninsula.

And so, for all who are eager to get in on the ground floor and help the Fellowship in these early investigatory stages, you have an opportunity now to invest in our people and our process for finding our new home. Providing access to experts like Mark Ewert, an attorney, financial advisors, an architect, etc. will help our enthusiastic volunteers make smart informed choices on our behalf.
To support expanding our knowledge and expertise, the Policy Board has established an Outside Consulting Fund. The initial target for the fund is $7,000—$4,000 of this will support Mark’s immediate work with us, and $3,000 will make a start for upcoming experts, this year and next, to guide our campaign, sale, purchase and move. We would like to raise these funds within the next month, before, say October 10. Please join us in this exciting phase of possibilities.
And we have help—seed money! Indeed, three members of our congregation have each pledged to match dollar-for-dollar up to $700. That’s a match of $2,100! So as you contribute, remember we are starting from an excellent base that moves us well along the way to $7,000.
